Gift of Pianos Program

The program is currently full and we cannot accept any new piano donation requests, with the exception of pianos less than 20 years old. For all others, we recommend you contact Keys 4/4 Kids. Thank you for your interest!

The Gift of Pianos program is a joint effort of the Chicago chapter of the Piano Technicians Guild and PianoForte Foundation to refurbish donated pianos and place them in schools, churches, and community institutions that are in need of a good instrument.

Hundreds of people per year contact the PTG to donate their pianos. Registered piano technicians review the requests and identify the pianos with enough potential to be reconditioned into well-playing instruments. Once pianos are located, they are placed in suitable reconditioning venues where chapter personnel volunteer their work for the purpose of training, camaraderie, and fulfillment of the charitable cause. A Donation Committee, made up of music school administrators or teachers as well as other Chicago-area music aficionados, and the Piano Donation Program Director, seek out worthwhile individuals or organizations to receive the pianos. Special care is given to the selection process to ensure neutrality and worthiness of each and every recipient. Technicians from across the areas where pianos have found their eventual homes will be solicited for upkeep and recognition of their efforts will be promoted.

The program provides benefits to:

  • the donors of the pianos, who receive a tax deduction for the appraised value of the instrument
  • the recipients of reconditioned pianos, which promote the study and enjoyment of the instrument and its repertoire
  • the young technician, by providing localized reconditioning facilities where experience can be gained working on real-life pianos under the supervision of more experienced technicians
  • the Chicago chapter of the PTG, by helping more Associates upgrade to RPT status
  • the suppliers of pianos, replacement parts suppliers, transportation services and other supporting parties by providing favorable promotional recognition for those contributing partners
  • the piano, which will begin a new, revitalized life
  • If you are interested in applying to the Gift of Pianos program, either as a donor or recipient, please call (312) 291-0291, or click the links below to access the donor and recipient applications. Once you have filled out your application, you can email it to rhapsody@pianofortefoundation.org, or print it out and mail it to PianoForte Foundation, 408 S. Michigan Ave., Chicago, IL 60605.

**Please note: We are unable to accept upright or spinet pianos. We are looking for grand pianos that will be able to sustain heavy use as practice and performance instruments.

**At this time, we are only able to accept and donate pianos in the greater Chicago area.
